چکیده

It is usually said that two-dimensional (1+1) gauge theories are trivial. In the continuum there are no transverse degrees of freedom to sustain any dynamics. Likewise, in the lattice formulation, the system factorizes (after gauge fixing) and a partition function reduces to a simple one-plaquette integral [1–3]. This picture neglects boundary conditions. It is well known [4] that, e.g., QuantumMaxwell DynamicsQMD2 on a circle with a circumference L is not entirely trivial. There remains one degree of freedom which cannot be gauged away. In the Coulomb gauge this is the famous, constant in space, mode Ax(t) ≡ A(t). Its dynamics is given by the simple, one degree of freedom, hamiltonian H = − e 2 2L d dA2 . (1)

Tachyon-Free Non-Supersymmetric Strings on Orbifolds

We discuss tachyon-free examples of (Type IIB on) non-compact nonsupersymmetric orbifolds with tachyons projected out by non-trivial discrete torsion. We also consider D3-branes in these backgrounds. The resulting non-supersymmetric gauge theories (including a chiral example) have supersymmetric spectra, but non-supersymmetric interactions. In the large N limit these theories are conformal to a...

In the presence of Chern-Simons interactions the wave functionals of physical states in 2 + 1-dimensional gauge theories vanish at a number of nodal points. We show that those nodes are located at some classical configurations which carry a non-trivial magnetic charge. In abelian gauge theories this fact explains why magnetic monopoles are suppressed by Chern-Simons interactions. In non-abelian...

On the Gribov Problem for Generalized Connections

The bundle structure of the space A of Ashtekar’s generalized connections is investigated in the compact case. It is proven that every stratum is a locally trivial fibre bundle. The only stratum being a principal fibre bundle is the generic stratum. Its structure group equals the space G of all generalized gauge transforms modulo the constant center-valued gauge transforms. For abelian gauge th...

We introduce two maximal non-abelian gauge xing conditions on the space of gauge orbits M for gauge theories over spaces with dimensions d 3. The gauge xings are complete in the sense that describe an open dense set M 0 of the space of gauge orbits M and select one and only one gauge eld per gauge orbit in M 0. There are not Gribov copies or ambiguities in these gauges. M 0 is a contractible ma...

Topologically non-trivial configurations in 3-dimensional Yang-Mills theory

Monopoles are expected to play an important role in confining quarks in QCD. In lattice simulations, one usually looks for U(1) monopoles by fixing an Abelian gauge [1]. However it is important to have a gauge invariant way of detecting monopoles in non-Abelian gauge theories. In a recent paper [2] Anishetty, Majumdar and Sharatchandra have given a criterion for characterizing topologically non...
